Marion Green Peel, MD, professionally known as Dr. Green, died peacefully in her sleep on January 19, 2019. She was 93 years old.
Marion was born September 6, 1925 to John and Emelyn Green and grew up in Cary, Mississippi. Marion chose to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps and become a physician, graduating from the University of Tennessee’s Medical School in 1949 – one of only four women in her graduating class. She went on to practice in Potts Camp and Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she met and married William “Billy” Hunter Peel in 1953. Together Marion and Billy had three daughters and a lifetime of adventures. The pair were well known for their sense of fun and generous hospitality.
Marion retired from medicine in 1995 after 46 years of practice. She was passionately dedicated to giving all under her care the best possible treatment and touched so many lives with her knowledge and compassion. After retirement she moved to Madison and pursued her favorite hobbies, gardening and volunteering at church, and spending time with her grandchildren, who called her Mommo.
Marion is survived by her brother John Green, her three daughters, Carey, Chere, and Michele; her 6 grandchildren, Bruce, Erica, Andrea, Micheal, Sara, and Julie; and her 3 great grandchildren, Kai, Adien and Evan. She is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Peel.
There will be a visitation for Marion on January 26 at Parkway Hills United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm with a memorial service directly following at 2:00 pm. She will be buried in a private ceremony on January 27th. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Parkway Hills United Methodist Church, PO Box 1721, Madison, MS 39130.
