Esther (Thomas) Medeiros

Esther Thomas Medeiros, born July 7, 1927, in Camden, Mississippi, entered her heavenly rest on May 1, 2024. She was 96 years old. 

Born to Walter and Ruby Thomas, Esther graduated from Camden High School and began working to help her parents with the expenses of caring for her 2 younger siblings. 

Esther was a devoted mother to her only child, Thomas Clifton Pope, who was her pride and joy. She always said that his birth changed her life for the better, and he felt that in the love and support she provided. 

In 1966 Esther began working as a salesclerk at the Gulfport Navy Exchange. Through the years she was promoted and in 1983 retired as a Supervisor. During her career she was elected Employee of the Quarter and received a letter of citation for her support and hard work during Hurricane Camille in 1969. 

On November 29, 1982 Esther married George P. Medeiros. They were happily married until his death on August 16, 2019. George and Esther enjoyed crafting, cooking, gardening and spending time with family and friends. They attended Conway Methodist Church. 

Esther had an exceptional long term memory and enjoyed sharing stories of growing up on the farm in Camden with her younger sister and brother and memories with George. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ruby Thomas; brother John Thomas; son Thomas Clifton Pope; and husband George P. Medeiros. 

Survivors include: Sister Sadie Carroll of Clinton, MS; niece Natasha Griffis of St. Marys, GA; nephew Doug Shirley of McKinney, TX; niece Lauri Carroll of Clinton, MS; John Mark, Chris and Jeff Thomas her nephews, of Canton, MS; and sister- in-law Janie Heckert of Gulfport, MS. 

Visitation will be held at Breeland Funeral Home in Canton, MS on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 10 to 11 AM. A memorial service will take place at the same location at 11 AM.
