Hugh Scott Penn, 69, went home to live with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
Born on September 20, 1954, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Lester Alexander Penn, Jr., Scott was raised in Canton, Mississippi, and graduated in 1972 from Canton Academy. Upon graduation, he played football at Holmes Community College. He then attended and ultimately graduated from the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of the football team, and a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Scott graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.
Scott married his high school sweetheart on June16,1979. They had three children: Hunter, Sterling, and Mary Hollin.
Scott, the owner of Scott Penn, Inc., was a third-generation timber dealer for International Paper Co., RMS, and Georgia Pacific. He was an active member of First Church of Canton for many years, where he was awarded the Cheek Award and an active member of the choir. He was also involved in his community as a member of the Rotary Club.
Known affectionately as “Big Scott” by his many grandchildren (and too many other family members and friends to count), he was the most welcoming and generous person that one could ever know. No matter how full his home was at times, he never hesitated to welcome anyone and everyone. He would cook and entertain until sunset and beyond.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents. Dorothy Bates and Lester Alexander Penn, Jr., and his beloved sons, Hunter Scott Penn and Sterling Bates Penn. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Penn Harreld.
Scott is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Margaret Stubbs “Missy” Penn & his daughter, Mary Hollin Penn Brock (David), along with grandchildren Margaret Blye “Maggie” Penn, Sterling Belle Brock, Mary Fisher Penn, Addison Grace Penn, Walker Harris Brock, & Elisha “Eli” Scott Brock. Scott is also survived by his brothers, Charles Penn (Lynn) and Kent Penn (Kathleen), all of Canton.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 5, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 am at First Church of Canton, with funeral service immediately following. Interment will be in the Canton Cemetery. Breeland Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
