John McKie, Jr. Obituary

John William McKie, Jr., beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Madison, Mississippi, on June 8, 2025, at the age of 70, following a brief battle with cancer.

Born on December 30, 1954, in Jackson, Mississippi, John was the son of Virginia Stogner McKie and John William “Bill” McKie. A lifelong learner and passionate educator of the Word, John earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Mississippi State University.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Mizette “Mimi” Swinny McKie; his beloved stepsons, Clifton Haywood Hinson (Candice) and William Henry Hinson; and his treasured grandsons, Cameron (13) and Cole (11) Hinson, all of Madison, Mississippi. He is also survived by his sister, Rosanne McKie Lee of Kenner, Louisiana, and his cherished feline companions, Priscilla and Samson.

A man of deep faith, John was a longtime member of Galloway United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and led numerous Bible studies for many years. Early in his adulthood, John recognized that teaching was one of his spiritual gifts, and he faithfully used it to serve others. Known for his thoughtful insight, captivating wit, and love for Scripture—especially the Old Testament prophets—John faithfully guided members of the Simon Peter’s Offshore Fishing Club Sunday School Class for over three decades. He studied and taught using the Common Lectionary, which shaped his approach to scripture and deepened his desire to explore the rhythm and richness of God’s Word. His gift for teaching brought the stories of prophets, kings, and ancient figures to life in unforgettable ways. Fittingly, he even named all of his cats after biblical characters.

John’s passion for teaching reflected his love for the Lord and his heart for helping others grow in their understanding of God’s promises and plans. In recent years, he and Mimi found joy in worshipping at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison, where they formed new friendships and reconnected with familiar faces.

Professionally, John was a respected partner and owner of the Godwin Group. Earlier in his career, he worked in direct advertising for McRae’s Department Store and Saks Fifth Avenue. He retired in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, creativity, and mentorship.

John remained a proud alumnus of Mississippi State University, serving on the MBA Advisory Board and establishing two endowment funds to support future business leaders. He was an avid supporter of MSU’s School of Business and held a deep commitment to education and growth.

As a third-generation steward of the McKie Place, nestled in the hills of Yazoo County, Mississippi, John found one of his greatest joys. It was one of his favorite places on earth, where he spent countless days both before and after retirement, especially with his beloved wife, Mimi. A true gentleman conservationist, John studied the latest and most effective agricultural and timber management practices. He took great pride in preparing his fall and winter food plots and, as an avid deer hunter, was always glad to share the right way to do it. His love of the land rivaled his passion for sports, history, and current events. Whether discussing politics, world history, WWII, or the latest game, chances were he had already read more about it than you had. He also cherished sharing that love of the land with his grandsons—teaching them how to plant food plots, track deer, and embrace the simple but lasting lessons found in the outdoors.

John’s life reflected wisdom, faith, humility, and love. He will be dearly missed, fondly remembered, and eternally celebrated.
