Mary H. Ferguson, 95, of Canton, MS went home to be with her Lord on March 26, 2023. Born Mary Evelyn Hobson on April 3, 1927 in Canton, MS to Clifton and Eva Hobson she grew up in Canton, MS, graduating from Canton High School in 1944. Mary later attended the University of Mississippi where she received her doctorate in Pharmaceutics with a minor in Journalism in 1964. She was a member of several honor societies and fraternities as well as serving as an instructor during her time at the University of Mississippi. Her professional career started in Fort Worth, Texas and took her to Washington, D. C. where she worked for the American Pharmaceutical Association from 1967-1982, serving as editor for the last eight years of her career.
It was in Washington, D. C. where she met and married the love of her life, Robert H. Ferguson. Robert was a WWII and Korean War Veteran and had an illustrious career with the U. S. Navy. Mary loved Robert’s Scottish traditions and she particularly loved the Scottish and West Highland Terriers that they treated as their own children. Mary’s other love and passion was reading books and learning new things which kept her mind sharp until her last days.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clifton and Eva Hobson; her husband, Robert H. Ferguson; two children, Jimmy Hudson and Jennifer Hudson; and her younger sister, Eva Marie Hobson Banes. Survivors include her nephew, Charles C. “Kip” Banes (Georgia Luann) of Starkville, MS and niece, Susan Wilson (Bruce) of Madison, MS: great nephews Mark Banes and Nick Wilson and great nieces Sarah Banes and Hannah Wilson as well as other out of state nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Canton, MS on Friday, March 31 from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. with services to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, 800 Avery Blvd. North, #100, Ridgeland, MS 39157 or to the charity of choice.
The family would also like to thank everyone at Madison County Nursing Home for their care of Mary during her stay.
