Phulan Sethi Obituary

Phulan Wanti Sethi, 86, of Brandon, MS, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024. Born
on January 13, 1938, in Goriwala Jhang, Pakistan, Phulan was a beloved member of the Indian
community and a source of unconditional love and strength for her family.
Phulan's life was a story of remarkable resilience. After losing her parents at a very young age,
she was taken in by Kanaya Ram and Sita Rani Sethi, and married their son Krishan Lal
Sethi. She faced early hardships that could have broken many, yet she emerged with a strong
dedication to building a better life for her family. Together with her husband, Krishan, and his
siblings, they immigrated to the United States with their six young children, overcoming
countless challenges to build a life filled with love, faith, and purpose. Their journey required
immense courage and perseverance and Phulan met every challenge with strength and an
unwavering devotion to her family’s well-being.
A founding member of the Sita Ram Hindu Temple in Jackson, MS, Phulan was fondly known
as the "Founding Mother." Her contributions to the temple reflect her commitment to her faith
and her community, building a foundation that will guide future generations. Her dedication to
Hinduism was a pillar of her life, and her pride in her faith and heritage was evident in all she
did. She found joy in celebrating traditions and sharing stories that connected her family to their
roots.
Phulan's love was perhaps most evident in her cooking, which brought her family together over
cherished meals. Her rajma chawal, pindi, and pronthi were family favorites, lovingly prepared
and full of warmth. Each meal she made was a gift, and her grandchildren especially cherished
the joy she brought to the table.
Phulan is survived by her devoted husband, Krishan L. Sethi, and their children: Darshana
(Som) Budhraja, Anil (Sunita) Sethi, Suman (Pardeep) Chatkara, Dazy (Manoj) Bajaj,
Santosh (Amit) Handa, and Geeta (Jeff) Foreman. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren
and 5 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and strength.
Phulan was preceded in death by her child, Sashi Bala Sethi, her siblings, Ram Saran
Khurana, Maya Khurana, and Shyam Sundar Khurana, and her parents, Ladha Ram and
Rambai Khurana.
Phulan’s life was a beautiful testament to faith, family, and love. Her incredible resilience and
dedication to her family and community left an indelible impact on everyone who knew her. She
will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
