Sandra Norman Obituary

Sandra Kay Everett Norman was the daughter of Mary and Sammy Everett of Greenwood, MS and sister to Rhonda and Steve Everett. She married Jerry Van Norman of Canton, MS and was blessed to be the mother of two children, Ashlea Norman Hamblin and John Patrick Norman. She was grandmother to seven. Ashlea and her husband Timothy have three children: Seth, Caleb and Lily Jayne. Patrick and his wife Elise have four children: David, Hannah, Elijah, and Noah.

Sandra and Jerry were happily married for 51 years. They lived, worked, worshipped, and raised their family in Greenwood and Jackson, MS before settling in Birmingham, AL in 1997. While in Jackson at Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church, Jerry and Sandra formed many long lasting relationships that remain special to this day, and her love of theology and God’s Word grew exponentially, until she was no longer satisfied by mere personal study but attended classes at Reformed Theological Seminary.

After moving to Birmingham, Sandra continued her work as an appeals officer for the Internal Revenue until her retirement in 2014 when she found the delight and joy of painting, weaving, and pottery. Her pottery work became a passion as she began selling her pieces for church benefits at St. Stephens Episcopal church as well as teaching. Teaching pottery was a new found and unexpected source of happiness as she made many dear friends in the process. A few years later, in God’s providence, her heart was turned to her grandchild, Lily Jayne, and teaching pottery turned to teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. She found an unexpected passion in teaching her granddaughter to love the things of the Lord and His creation, from the bees and flowers to the order of mathematics.

Sandra loved to cook for her family and make beautiful meals, especially for her husband. She couldn’t wait for spring when there were flowers to be planted and beach trips to plan. Her family rejoices that as of March 13 she walks through the garden with her Savior, but they can’t wait to see her again.

A memorial service was held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL on Wednesday, March 2024.  Sandra's mortal remains will be laid to rest in a graveside service in the Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery, 759 Highway 51, Madison, MS at 12:30 pm on Friday, April 5, 2024.  The service is to be led by the Rev. Elbert McGowan, senior pastor of Redeemer Church PCA - Jackson.  Family and friends are invited afterward for light refreshments at the home of Patrick and Elsie Norman, 4771 East Massena Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Sandra's name be directed to Reformed Theological Seminary at https://rts.edu or by mailing a check to Reformed Theological Seminary located at 4268 I-55 North, Jackson, Mississippi 39211.
